The First Responder Network Authority (FirstNet Authority) and the National Institute of Standards and Technology(link is external) (NIST) announced that registration is open for 5x5: The Public Safety Innovation Summit(link is external), to be held June 28-30, 2023, in San Diego, California.

This year’s event is an evolution of NIST’s Public Safety Communications Research(link is external) (PSCR) Division’s Annual Stakeholder Meeting, which brings together leaders from public safety, academia, government, and industry to collaborate on responder communications technology.

“We are excited to present a new, more holistic approach to the future of public safety communications with 5x5,” said PSCR Division Chief Dereck Orr. “The evolution of this event provides an opportunity for leaders across industries to share their unique perspectives and drive change.”

“The FirstNet Authority is thrilled to join with PSCR to create a unique event for leaders in public safety to exchange ideas and discuss key innovations,” said FirstNet Authority Chief Market Engagement Officer Jeremy Zollo. “We look forward to learning more about public safety’s needs and discussing key innovations that could make the connected responder a reality. We invite all public safety communications leaders to join us.”

5x5 is a continuation of the strong partnership between PSCR and the FirstNet Authority to advance public safety communications. “Government can make a difference when we work closely with public safety,” said Orr. “5x5 is the newest avenue for NIST and the FirstNet Authority to collaborate with key stakeholders to advance communications for the public safety community.”

“5x5” is a term used by radio operators to express excellent strength and perfect clarity, also known as “loud and clear.” The inaugural 5x5 summit will focus on the development and use of current and future technologies to support public safety operations. At this year’s event, attendees will have the opportunity to:

  • Try out the latest innovations in public safety communications technology.

  • Learn how technology is being used by first responders today.

  • Share their ideas with fellow leaders.

  • See demonstrations of the latest public safety devices, apps, and other assets.

Registration is now open for the event and can be found at: https://www.nist.gov/news-events/events/2023/06/5x5-public-safety-innovation-summit(link is external).
