Now deployed in more than half of the world’s metros, RFS’s radiating cable provides coverage for a combined daily ridership of more than 180 million commuters. Notable deployments include: London’s Elizabeth Line, Singapore Subway and Munich Metro. The solution was also used in the configuration that set a world record for in-tunnel download speeds in the Follobanen deployment in Norway in 2018.

This latest expansion of its footprint in underground subway systems coincides with the 50th anniversary of its flagship RADIAFLEX cable. This radiating cable invented and patented by RFS in 1972, allows consistent, robust, and reliable communications coverage in challenging tunnel environments. The technology has constantly evolved to keep pace with changing standards, supporting all mission critical and commercial wireless services, working in all 3GPP bands up to 3.8GHz. RFS has concentrated on ensuring the solution is as flexible as possible, developing technology agnostic cable that can work with a variety of set-ups. This includes mixed configurations and multi-operator or shared infrastructure deployments, as well as meeting the requirements needed for MIMO deployments.

Axel Schroeder, Global Product Manager Indoor Solutions Business Unit Cables commented, “A lot has changed in the past 50 years however tunnels have consistently been one of the most challenging environments faced by our customers. Communication requirements in underground rail settings have increased dramatically and we have worked to ensure we keep pace. Very few technologies stand the test of time in the way we have seen with RADIAFLEX, and we look forward to continuing to develop the cable so it continues to be the leading solution on the market for in-tunnel deployments.”
