The Government of Luxembourg, in partnership with the Emergency Telecommunications Cluster (ETC), has launched a groundbreaking initiative aimed at addressing the critical information and technology gap in Africa's Sahel region. This initiative will deliver essential digital services, training opportunities, and resources to over 3,650 individuals, with a particular focus on host communities, refugees, and youth aged 18 to 34.

Burkina Faso and Niger have been selected as the first beneficiaries of this transformative program. The ETC, a global network of organizations specializing in providing shared communication services during humanitarian emergencies, is spearheading efforts to bridge the region’s significant disparities in access to information and communication technology (ICT). Luxembourg’s support will enable the ETC to deliver customized ICT solutions designed to provide vulnerable communities with access to lifesaving information, global connectivity, and enhanced digital skills.

Research indicates that in the Central Sahel region, over 40% of the population lives below the poverty line, exacerbating disparities in access to essential services, including ICT. The lack of connectivity and information further entrenches poverty and limits opportunities for progress.

“In a region characterized by increasing vulnerability to climate change, chronic food insecurity, and escalating violence, the inability to access vital information and connect with the rest of the world leaves communities in the Sahel region isolated and perpetually disadvantaged,” stated the ETC.

This initiative not only seeks to address immediate communication and information needs but also aims to foster long-term development by equipping communities with the tools and skills necessary for economic and social empowerment in an increasingly digital world.

The project underscores Luxembourg’s unwavering commitment to leveraging technology and strategic partnerships to tackle global challenges and support the resilience of vulnerable populations.
