Ericsson has announced the successful deployment of its first Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS) radios operating in the 1900 MHz spectrum (5G band n101) at DB InfraGO’s digital testbed in the Ore Mountains. The milestone marks a significant step forward in enabling large-scale, real-world testing of next-generation railway communications.

The deployment establishes a robust testing environment under live operational conditions, providing a critical platform to validate FRMCS capabilities. Built on advanced 5G technology, FRMCS is set to replace legacy railway communication systems and deliver mission-critical connectivity for rail operations. The system is expected to enhance operational efficiency, improve safety, and support increased network performance across Europe’s rail infrastructure.

As part of the next phase, DB InfraGO will conduct comprehensive radio performance evaluations, including n101 spectrum measurements and coverage testing. These activities will lay the groundwork for broader field trials and support upcoming validation initiatives ahead of the MORANE-2 project’s large-scale demonstrations.

MORANE-2, a flagship European program, aims to validate FRMCS specifications, ensure interoperability across vendors and networks, and accelerate readiness for continent-wide deployment by the end of the decade. The initiative plays a central role in aligning railway and telecommunications stakeholders toward a unified digital communication standard.

Ericsson’s end-to-end FRMCS solution, including its newly deployed radio technology, underscores the company’s commitment to advancing mission-critical communications for the rail sector. Working in close collaboration with DB InfraGO and partners within the MORANE-2 consortium, Ericsson is contributing to the development of a future-proof communications infrastructure.

Through continued cooperation across the rail and telecom ecosystem, industry leaders are collectively shaping the digital backbone of Europe’s railways—paving the way for safer, more efficient, and highly connected transportation networks.
