SafetyNet Critical Communications (SafetyNet) has been evaluating a trailer-based deployable cellular solution for public safety, while also exploring the potential of tethered drone technology to extend communications capabilities in challenging operational environments.

The technology demonstration brought together representatives from across New Zealand’s public safety sector, including emergency services agencies and SafetyNet partners Hourua and One New Zealand. The session focused on how rapidly deployable communications technologies could support emergency response, natural disaster recovery, search and rescue, and other operations where conventional communications infrastructure may be unavailable or disrupted.

The trailer-based Public Safety Network capability is designed to provide a broader coverage footprint than SafetyNet’s compact deployable solution, potentially enabling communications for a larger number of users across an expanded operational area. Such a capability could be particularly relevant to large-scale search and rescue missions and other incidents requiring temporary, resilient communications infrastructure.

The session also featured an XM2/Eonetics tethered drone equipped with Nokia telecommunications technology, demonstrating how aerial communications platforms could complement ground-based and conventional network infrastructure. Tethered systems can provide elevated communications coverage while remaining connected to a ground-based power and communications infrastructure.

For SafetyNet, the demonstration was as much about operational collaboration as technology. Bringing public safety agencies, technology providers and subject-matter experts together provided an opportunity to examine real-world requirements, assess emerging capabilities and explore how deployable communications could contribute to the future of public safety communications in New Zealand.

The engagement reflects the growing focus on flexible, rapidly deployable network solutions capable of supporting emergency responders when fixed communications infrastructure is unavailable, damaged or insufficient for the operational environment.
