The New Zealand Government has announced a significant funding initiative to upgrade critical communication networks for Maritime New Zealand and Coastguard New Zealand, enhancing frontline search and rescue operations to save lives and keep Kiwis safe on the water, Transport Minister Simeon Brown and Associate Transport Minister Matt Doocey confirmed today.
“New Zealand oversees one of the largest maritime search and rescue zones in the world. To coordinate rescue efforts across these vast areas, Maritime New Zealand relies on the National Maritime Distress and Safety Communications Service (NMDSCS). Our Government is proud to invest in modernizing this essential infrastructure, enabling Maritime New Zealand to continue its vital, lifesaving work,” said Minister Brown.
The upgrade of the NMDSCS will align the system with international standards, ensuring its capacity to handle increasing traffic in New Zealand’s waters. Minister Brown emphasized the importance of this investment, stating, “Modernizing the NMDSCS will save lives. Without this funding, the aging system poses a risk to maritime safety as it nears the end of its operational life.”
In addition, the Government will support Coastguard New Zealand by upgrading its Very High Frequency (VHF) maritime radio network. The new funding will replace outdated infrastructure with modern, reliable technology to meet the growing demands of New Zealand’s recreational and commercial maritime sectors.
“The VHF maritime radio network is a critical communication tool, connecting vessels in distress with rescue teams. This urgently needed upgrade will provide Coastguard with the infrastructure to respond effectively to emergencies,” Minister Brown said. “The improved system will not only futureproof communications but also ensure that Kiwis on the water have a dependable lifeline in times of need.”
As maritime activity increases across New Zealand, these upgrades come at a pivotal time to bolster safety measures.
“Our Government’s investment in these core communication networks will better equip search and rescue teams, particularly during busy summer seasons when the demand for these life-saving services is at its peak,” said Associate Minister Doocey.
He added, “Maritime New Zealand and Coastguard New Zealand play a crucial role in saving lives. This funding demonstrates our commitment to strengthening their capabilities and ensuring they can respond swiftly and effectively to emergencies. These upgrades will significantly enhance New Zealand’s rescue resilience and maritime safety.”
The upgrades are part of the Government’s broader commitment to improving critical infrastructure and ensuring safer outcomes for all New Zealanders engaging in maritime activities.
