Radio Frequency Systems (RFS), a global designer and manufacturer of wireless connectivity solutions, announced that it has been selected by the Japan Mobile Communications Infrastructure Association (JMCIA) for wireless infrastructure projects in new railway tunnels following successful equipment trials in Tokyo.

The trials demonstrated the suitability of RFS’s RADIAFLEX radiating cable for delivering continuous coverage across tunnel environments. It provided proof of concept for a configuration using both a single radiating cable and 2x2 MIMO which uses two differently polarized cables to increase the capabilities of the system. The MIMO capabilities shown in the trial allowed the speed and capacity of the deployment to be increased in line with changing requirements. It also demonstrated future-proofing; delivering 4G connectivity while being fully 5G-ready, plus by using RFS’s stopband free cable, the system can be retuned if necessary to align with future standards.

The new projects will use 8km of RFS RADIAFLEX cable throughout new underground tunnels. The delivery of the project is already underway and will be able to offer 4G LTE and 5G NR to customers before the end of 2022.

Monika Maurer, CEO at RFS commented, “We’re delighted to be working with JMCIA on this project. Since the very first installation exactly 50 years ago, RADIAFLEX cables have always been designed to suit the current and future needs of our customers and we look forward to seeing that in action across these projects.”
